The following is a list of products that may
be useful for cleaning and rust protection:
-
Kerosene and/or WD40
to clean the larger surfaces of Cosmoline
-
A
one-gallon can of carburetor cleaner with strainer to
clean the smaller parts is useful. This is available
at most auto parts stores (use gloves when working
with this solvent).
-
A wax to protect steel
surfaces from rust. Many users prefer a product called
Waxilit, available from Garrett Wade (800-221-2942,
Garrett Model #4510.10 for 2 pounds or #4510.8 for 2.5
ounces) or Eagle Tools
(626-797-8262). It’s easier to apply and buff than
auto wax and doesn't contain any polishing compounds.
Many users report fine results with common paste wax.
-
Users living in high humidity
environments may need to take extra precautions for
rust prevention. Here is one belt-and-suspenders
technique: On larger surfaces,
rip fence bar, etc. spray on one application of
TopCoat and blow it dry with compressed air.
Apply
and blow dry the TopCoat a second time.
Then wax,
blow the wax dry with compressed air and buff.
TopCoat is available from MSC-direct.com among others.
-
For the bolts and
steel fittings that are hard to get at, Boeshield T-9
may be very helpful in rust prevention. Available at
http://www.boeshield.com/index.htm
or you can order it (or buy it at) West Marine. This
is a wax and dry lube in one and does not contain
silicon. Great stuff, but it is not for surfaces
where you'll be sliding wood.
-
Felder Super Gleit
spray is very useful for reducing friction between
table surfaces and the stock you are machining.
Felder Spindelfluid is useful for the worm screws that
drive the saw and shaper trunnion up/down/tilt. This
fluid is also very useful on the rip fence bar to
reduce friction and make the rip fence easier to slide
sideways.
-
Some users have had great success with
Dow 321 dry lube on parts that are exposed to sawdust
yet are usually lubricated with oil or grease.
The Dow 321 is a spray-on dry lube that bonds to the
molecular structure of the components yielding a
semi-permanent lube. It is applicable for use on
700-series trunion and the acme worm screws that
drive the trunion tilt and elevation mechanisms.
Clean the parts to receive the Dow 321 very thoroughly
with Naphtha before applying this dry lube. Dow
321 is also available from MSC-direct.com.
